Question
Hi,
My surname is Sinha which in bengali my ancestors used to write as Singha. My Gotra is Vatsav. Some not-so-close relatives of mine used Bai after their name(women).I am a kayastha, but get to hear about being a Kshatriya and descendant of some king.Would like to know if you can trace my origin or if I am really the descendant of any King.

Thanks a lot in advance.Looking forward to your reply.

Answer
Dear Sauvik,

I have answered this question previously also. The information you give is too sketchy to trace your origins. Generally, Kayasthas were courtiers and administrators in hindu kingdoms. They could be 'kshatriyas', and 'Kayastha' could denote a particular philosophy of life adopted by a group of people in olden days, just like Charvaks, Lokayatas, Ajivakas, Kashmir Shaivism, Gorakhpanthis, etc. Because of their administrative acumen, they could have been invited by Bengal kings in history.

Yours sincerely,
