Question
Dear Prof Swapan

In the Holy epic Ramayana, Lord Rama incarnation of Lord Vishnu leaves his wife after Victory over Ravana.

Victory of good over Evil.

Do you feel that Lord Rama has made a mistake in part of leaving his wife Seeta?.

Thanks & regards

Answer
Dear Prashant

On face value as a human being, it looks so. However, on a larger view, Lord Rama wanted to send a message that everyone is equal, whether queen or ordinary person. Gaining trust over the citizen of the kingdom was seen needed to end the loose talk about HER impurity. This did not minimize the respect Sita had for Rama. However her subsequent action depicted the status of women in Society. That message was loud and clear.

Hope that helps
