QUESTION: Dear Swami

The Mahabharat and Ramayana are both Great Epics in Hindu religion.

What are the reasons that our Holy Book - BhagwatGeeta is based on Mahabharat and not Ramayana ?.

Thanks & Regards,

ANSWER: Dear Prashant S Akerkar,

Namaste.

Bhagavad Gita was told by Sri Krishna to Arjuna before the war of Mahabharata and so it is part of the Mahabharata.

QUESTION: Dear Swami

Thanks.

My Question was Why our holy book is not Ramayana ?.

Thanks & Regards,
Prashant S Akerkar

Answer
Dear Prashant S Akerkar,

Namaste.

The scriptures of Hinduism are the Vedas. Upanishads form part of the Vedas. Also, in Hinduism, three kinds of literature are considered important and called 'Prasthana-Traya'. They are Upanishads, Brahmasutras, and the Gita.

The Bhagavadgita is considered holy because it contains instructions for spiritual life. Ramayana and Mahabharata in their entirety are not scriptures but only epics or itihasas as they contain accounts of happenings.

With best wishes,
