Hindus/Regarding Parents

Question
Dear Master,

What should be the duties of a Son towards their Parents? Parents are regarded as Live Gods. Then what if Parents commit any mistakes towards their children? If they mistreat or abuse them, should they still forgive their Parents? Even if they don't realise also one should forgive them? How to deal with these type of situations? Please advice.

Answer
Hi,

It is the duty of the children to give respect to the parents and take care of them in their old age. There are no preconditions to this requirement. We obtain our physical body from them. Therefore we are obligated to them irrespective of how they treat us or how they bring us up.

Whoever harms another will be punished. This is the law of karma. Surely the wrong doer will suffer, there is no exception to this law. However, it is the duty of God to punish the wrong doer. If some one causes harm to me and if I hit him back, then the wrong doer is punished. But I will surely undergo suffering because I hit him back. Therefore, I should not harm anyone even if they harm me.

This is applicable to parents as well. If they mistreat or abuse the children they will surely suffer the consequences. However, if the children neglect their duty to the parents thereby harming them then the children will also suffer.

Therefore, one should follow one's own dharma at all times. There can be no excuses to this requirement. Serving the parents and not harming anyone are essential parts of Dharma.
