Sir,

Keeping a count of time especially without electro mechanical devices is an Herculean task. Our ancestors had a well developed theory to define various periods like solar year, sidereal year etc. However, they had also realized that this model needs to be validated by physical observation and also updated when necessary. They had understood the difficulty of using the solar day as the length of the solar day is never constant. This would be more so in the arctic region if as some believe the Aryans had their origin far up North. That apart, having seen the difficulty of using a solar day, they defined a new entity of time called ‘tithi’ The ‘tithi’ is defined as 12 degrees of difference between the altitudes of the sun and the moon. On the new moon day, the moon is not visible as it is coplanar with the sun and rises with the sun. However, on subsequent days, it rises late by about 45 minutes each day. So, on the day after the Newmoon day, the moon trailing behind the sun by about 12 degrees. Hence when the sun sets, the moon also sets after some time but we don’t see the moon because of its proximity to the sun. On the next day, the moon trails behind by about 24 degrees and hence the first moon is sighted two days after the Newmoon. This is ‘dooj ka chand’ or ‘dvitiya moon’ which can be verified by physical observation. The Muslims also follow this principle to define the beginning of a month. If we look at the moon two days prior to Newmoon, this will be the last sighting of the moon before ‘dooj ka chand’ and this is called ‘pradosh’ again a phenomenon which religious scriptures expect us to see and perform rituals. The Newmoon can not be observed and thus is arrived at by interpolation. The accuracy of interpolation can be further improved if there are more data points for ‘curve fitting’. Ekadasi and Chaturthi are both four thithis on either side of the Newmoon and it is possible to observe moon on these days more accurately and easily. What is explained for the Newmoon is also true of the Fullmoon. There are ekadasi and chaturthi on either side of Fullmoon also. The ancient scholars laid down a system by which many people would observe these phenomenon and thus validate their count of time. If the observations did infact differ from calculations, then it would entail updating the values of earth’s precession which was done as required. Today we all are aware that after 2012 our earth’s axis is going to point towards a slightly different direction due to precession and even our pole star is going to be different after some time (not immediately though as these changes are very slow). Hence the rituals of ekadasi, chaturthi, dvitiya and pradosh are a part of the time keeping system evolved by our ancestors.
