Hockey - Penalty Shot

Expert: T. Martina - 3/17/2009

Question
Team A has 1 Player in the box for a hooking minor.( 1:18 remaining on the penalty )
Team B is on the PP and is awarded a Penalty Shot
for an tripping infraction on a breakaway. The player scores on the penalty shot. Does the player already in the box still stay there since the penalty shot was for another infraction ??????

Answer
Hi Chris,

I see where your thoughts are going on this... a goal is scored so the first player that was penalized gets out of the box.  Normally this is right.  BUT when a penalty shot is called, the penalty shot takes the place of a time-infraction (2 minute minor penalty for example)... so the existing penalty would not expire automatically.

If another 2 minute infraction was being called, and a legitimate goal is scored, then the first penalty would expire.

Hope this helps!
