Home Business - Do I need a business license?

Expert: Dave Turner - 9/24/2003

Question
Hi, I wasn't sure who to ask--I'm hoping you may be able to help.

I have an internet "business" that I really don't make much money on -- maybe $1k/year because its seasonal.

My question is this (I'm in WA state). If I want to register my "brand name", do I need a business license? (I currently have an inactive license.)

I guess I'm not quite sure how all of this works. Any advice would be wonderful--I'd like to keep away from the business license but still be able to reserve my "brand name". Is that even possible? I just want to make sure I do it the right way so I dont' get in trouble!

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Amber:

Yes, if you want to protect your brand name, you definitely will need to register it in some form. Otherwise, you have no legal recourse, in the event someone attempts to steal your brand name. You should be able to get the information you need at your local townhall or courthouse.

In addition, if you want to protect your name on an international level, I recommend the following company:

I wish you the best of luck!

Sincerely,
