Home Business - Be my own Temp

Expert: Sue Lewis - 9/27/2004

Question
I'm thinking of starting my own Secretarial temp service.  I chose to be the only employee... I want to go out and sell myself as a temp. I have AS degree and over 12 years experience in the field.  I have also worked at temp agencies in the past.  Would I have to get Bonded?  I carry my own health insurance.  What else would I need to know and/or do you have any suggestions?

Thanks, Sue, I appreciate your help.
Sincerely,
Barb White

Answer
Hi,

This sounds like a great idea.

Bonding might be a good thing to do but I'm not really qualified to advise you on this. Talk with your insurance agent. It's always wise to cover yourself incase something goes wrong.

I think the most important thing you'll need to do is distinguish your services from what they would get if they went through another temp agency. Here's the time to really sell your experience and the benefits of working with you. I'm sure you'll do better work because you aren't using this as a stepping stone to a full time job.

Check with your city about licensing and also check if there is a regulatory agency that oversees temp agencies (either local or state). You may want to call your business just a secretarial service rather than a temp agency. Talk with an accountant about the tax implications of both.

Good luck

Sue Lewis
