how long after the expiration date is it still safe to use can goods?

Hi Lo,

Most canned goods don't have an expiration date. Some do however have a "best by" date. This is just the manufacturer telling you when they think the flavor will still be at its best. I checked through my cupboards and found that even tuna doesn't have an expiration date, just a suggested date to use it by. I also found a can of Lima Beans that I have had since 2001... it has no expiration date at all!

If you have some older canned goods check to make sure the top or bottom of the can is not bulging and that there are no dents. When you open the can smell the food. If it does not smell or look spoiled then it is ok to use.
