Home Furnishings/Furniture - Couch Cushions and re-ordering cores??

Expert: Duane Collie - 10/28/2009

Question
Hello!  First, thanks for taking the time to read my question.

My husband and I have a couch and loveseat from Rooms to Go called the "newkirk" style.  We have had it for almost 5 years and the overall couch is good condition, but the cushions and pillows are shot and the fabric that covers the coils is coming up.

Truth be told, my husband did have a friend (I use this term loosely :) ) sleep on the couch for about three months.  I contacted Rooms to go and they directed me to New Generations furntiure in TN.  I have called about 15 times and the number eiather rings or is busy.  I need to rplace the back cushions (they appear to be a green fiberfill) and the lower cushions (thye are foam w some type of overlay).  Addtionally, how would I go about reattaching the fabric over the coils and give the couch some much needed support??

Phew so many questions!!! Thanks in advance for your help!  BTW I am in the Tampa area.

:) KW

Answer
Hi Kristi,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it sounds to me like your sofa needs replacement.  Cushion cores, if made properly, are not cheap (about $ 110 per section to replace) x 6 would mean over $ 600.  But the real reason is your springs sound as though they are no longer stable in the lower deck frame, and are coming up through the webbing otherwise they would not be stressing the fabric, and that makes the sofa shot for the most part.  Your cost/benefit is not worth repairing it and you would be better off to buy new.

If money is tight, look on Craigslist in the Tampa area for high-quality used furniture. I've seen very expensive, and like-new pieces sell on C/L for pennies on the dollar.  Good luck.
