Home Furnishings/Furniture - door gaps

Expert: Dave Coil - 11/4/2009

Question
Hi Dave,  how much of a gap should be between the bottom of an interior door and the flooring (carpet/vinyl).  Also, how much of a gap should there be between double doors?
Thanks,
Rob

Answer
The REAl answer will alarm you.  If you have forced air heat/air, you need to have enough space to accomplish air return.  If you have 8" round duct feeding the room, you need 50 square inches of space for air travel.  That would equal about 1 1/2" off the floor.  Nobody does that.  That is part of the problem.  Normal door clearance should be at LEAST 1/2".
Between double doors...no more than the entire perimeter.
