Home Furnishings/Furniture - refacing an old brick fireplace

Expert: Dave Coil - 9/23/2009

Question
I have an old brick fireplace that i am thinking about refacing.
With some help from my two year old,  the bricks are falling out and just plum falling apart. I have heard of many different ways of refacing a brick fireplace w/ new material,  but i thought i would shoot the question towards you to see what you think.  I have heard about using chicken wire and mortar as a way to set new stone on top of the old bricks to resurface.  I was wondering if this was a good idea or not.  Or if you can inform me on a better way to resurface this fireplace.  My plan is to use smaller stones to go on top.  Please give me some ideas on how to go about doing this,  it would be greatly appreciated,  Thank you Brandon

Answer
My first concern is the looseness you are talking about. You want a very SoUND surface.  If anything is loose...remove it.  Take a hammer and tap all around.  If it sounds solid...leave it.  If hollow...remove it.  You may want to use 1/4" hardibacker and the chicken wire.  You can use fasteners on the hardi...then screws for the wire.
