Home Furnishings/Furniture - billiard lamp

Question
"Not sure if you can answer this, but I cannot find anyone else online with general expertise. We just finished our basement and are shopping for a pool table (prob want to spend $2700-$3000)-hopefully I can still get good quality for that price? Secondly, we have a drop ceiling and want to get a billiard lamp ($500 or so)...any advice on hooking that up-can we do that by ourselves? I understand it doesnt come with a plug, but we have to cut the wire and add one? Mainly concerned with anchoring it in the ceiling properly....would like to ask someone other than the store because they would just tell us "how easy" it is...more honesty from this website I would think! Thanks! Karen";

Answer
I am going to make an assumption that a drop ceiling means metal ribs and panels.   This being the case, you can remove the panels and get to the framing above.  Find a secure mounting area, or create one, and install an electrical box.   Be sure to put this box as near center of the table area as possible.   A "ceiling fan box" is rated to carry a larger load, which should be enough for a large light fixture.  Another type fixture is "chain hung" light.  This would also create the need for support above the drop ceiling.  For the electrical connections....Home Depot has books that could help with this simple connection.  If in doubt...hire an electrician.  $100.
