Question I have a tile backsplash in my bathroom that I would like to take down and replace. I took the old tile down and the majority of the paper from the sheetrock came with the tile. With one tile (4 inch tiles) a section of the sheetrock came up with the tile. I want to put new tile up but I'm not sure what I need to do to prepare the existing wall. Can I apply a thin layer of joint compound to the wall where the paper is missing as well as the hole I created? Or what other suggestions might you have for me to do? Also, I would like to remove wall tile from our other bathrooms but I didn't know if you could recommend an easier way to remove the existing wall tiles.
Answer I would recommend the dry mix joint compound for the hole to fill. It will dry in minutes vs days. I also recommend using the ready mix compound (after the other dries) and a layer of drywall tape to put a firm foundation back for the new wall cover. As for your other tile removal...It is never easy...but if you drill a hole in the tile...a place to pry from...you might get more off..and leave more wall.
