Home Improvement--General - Bathroom Window Weep Holes

Expert: Donald Bosch - 10/16/2009

Question
I recently had vinyl sliding window installed in my bathroom on the shower wall. It has weep hole openings on the inside runner, and water from the shower and condensation flows into the runner and out the outside weepholes. Will I have problems in the winter with water freezing in the window frame or as it flows out the weephole?

Answer
Hi Paul,

Are they still designing homes like that?  I thought finally someone had figured out that a shower stall is not quite the right place to put a window.

Depending on the weather, you may have problems in the winter, yes.  As the water weeps outside, it will freeze if the temperature is low enough, and if the sun does not melt it before the next time, it will back up into the window.

Put something in front of the window for the winter season.  Some manner of curtain of blind that is plastic so that no water goes to the window.

regards,

Don.
