Question Hello, My home builder was kind enough to side over where there is supposed to be a gable vent in my garage attic. I have grown tired of the excessive heat in my garage so I want to fix this. There is a 22 3/4 in by 29 in hole in the plywood wall for this vent and I want to keep this as big as possible as I also want to add a attic fan blowing up into the attic. My problem is that I can't find a gable vent this size and have no idea how to install one if I could. Will I have to remove the siding? Any help would be most appreciated. Tim
Answer Tim,
I checked and found several at Home Depot that were 24"x30", you want the hole to be a little smaller so you'll have something to nail to.
You can just pull off the siding down to the vent area, the vent nails up to the plywood, I would caulk it at the plywood, then you'll need to put a piece of "J" channel around the vent, then cut your siding to fit and nail it back in place.
Cut the siding 1/2" short of actual measurement to allow room for expansion, also do not nail it down tight, leave the nailheads out 1/8 to 3/16" so the siding can move.
If you have any more questions or get stuck anywhere, let me know and we'll get you going again.
