Question Hello. Can you kindly comment on the success of bathtub re-glazing? I do have the option of replacing the tub, but,oh such a mess! How long would it last? If I do replace it is it better to go with a fiberglass one or steel one? Which is better? If I choose to re-glaze the tub, can I successfully tile over top of the existing tile? The current tile is 4 inch square and I would go with 12 inch square. Thanks for your help. Liz
Answer Liz,
I have never done any reglazing myself, but, I have a friend who did his own, just to change the color and his has looked nice for five years now. It is a messy job.
Fiberglass or steel tub, purely personal preference, some people like the cast iron because that's about the only way you can get a tub with the claw feet, or one that sits up off the floor.
Fiberglass is better for enclosures or second floor baths.
I'm sorry you will not be able to tile over tile, first, you would end up with too thick of a wall cover, second, the mastic or thinset will not stick effectively to the first layer of tile.
You will need to remove the old tile and then install the new ones.
