Home Improvement--General - leaking door

Expert: Donald Bosch - 10/19/2009

Question
Dear Mr. Bosch,
We have had a very wet month and we had noticed that our front door was leaking on the bottom. We replaced the weather stripping (magnatic stripping)which was what was recommended for us to use. THE DOOR IS STILL LEAKING. The hardwood floors are now ruined.Could you please give me some other ideas on what it could be. We have had a bad experience with the GC in our area( charged us $250 to put a back door in and didn't finish the job). Thank you for your time and hope to hear from you soon as we are going to have rain for the remainder of this month...Frustrated

Answer
Hi Rochelle,

Did you see the water come in on the sill under the weatherstripping or did someone assume that's where it was coming from?

I ask because the water may be coming in from underneath the door frame/threshold. Have you checked this?

You do not mention whether your door is a metal door or a wooden door, so it is difficult for me to pinpoint the origin of the leak, certainly without a picture to assist me in identifying the possible entry points.

my e-mail is dondxin1@hughes.net is you wish to send me a picture of the sill or threshold area.

regards,

Don.
