Question I had sided my cottage in pine with an semi-transparent oil base cedar stain three years ago. The first year it was beautiful but every year since it becomes darker and now almost black. What did I do wrong and what can I do to bring it back to a cedar color? Sincewrely, GWN
Answer Wayne,
The finish applied must contain UV protection and a water repellent. The discoloration is probably the result of UV light getting to the wood and deteriorating it. Moisture will also cause the wood to weather and turn gray to black.
You need to pressure wash the wood to get it back to clear wood then add a finish that has good UV and water protection. Perma-Chink, Sashco and Sikkens all have such products available. They all require multiple coats to complete their finish systems. Good luck.
