Home Improvement--General - Garage door

Question
Hi Bill
I am helping my elderly mom with the upkeep of her house. The garage door and a section under the front window of the  house consist of some type of wood panels-square panels on the two car garage door and horizontal under the window.
When the house was built in the early 80's I bet it looked great-a golden color stain or paint with some type of clear coating.
Over the years the coating has weathered off, and most of the colour is gone, they are a dull grey. The wood is still good.
Several homes built at the same time in this suburb have the same design and they have all weathered badly, leaving me to think that this particular trim is not appropriate for the climate conditions of Montana.Besides, it seems like a lot of work to try to get it back to its original state-sanding, staining, coating.
Can you reccomend an easier way to renew it? Would I need to sand everything off? The door, with all its panels and corners would take days, and my bad back and arthritis are a hindrance.
Could I attack it with a scraper and then apply some sort of stain or paint with a brush? I would like to use a gold colour, if available, which is quite eye catching. The trim of the house is brown stain but the house would look boring if I used that.
Thanks!

Answer
Bud,

You could use a scraper on that, but, try going to your local tool rental place and see what type of paint removal tools they have on hand, there are quite a few new tools on the market to make this job easier. Once you get the varnish off, try your new stain in a small corner, keep in mind the greying of the wood will have an affect on the new color, so make your color adjustments accordingly.

If you have to replace any of it, I would use cedar, it will last a long time and is naturally insect resistant.
