Home Improvement--General - Repair stripped metal door / hinge

Expert: Bill Hutson - 6/30/2009

Question
I would like to repair our external metal storm/screen door instead of
replacing it.  The only problem with the door is that the door has stripped
itself off of the screws in the door hinges.  I saw other postings that gave
advice on repairing stripped wood doors.  Is there a similar glue/fill material
approach for metal doors?  Also, my young son kept taking apart the swing
arm that kept the door from slamming shut, so we removed it.  I'm guessing
this is why the door has stripped its hinges?  Your advice would be very
appreciated - even if it is just "get a new door".  (We just replaced the storm
glass and screens so would like to avoid replacing, if possible.)  Thank you!

Answer
Caryn,

You have a couple things you can try, use larger screws, fill the holes with a metallic putty, then redrill the holes, (they use this putty to repair gas tanks, you get it at the auto parts store), or, you could redrill new holes next to the current holes and put in new screws.
If none of those work out, then you'll have to get a new door.
You can get one cheap at the rehab stores, Habitat has one, I know in Indy there are 4 or 5 rehab stores that sell used and new building materials.
