Question Bill:
I brush stained a fiberglass door with a gel stain. The result was much darker than I hoped. It has already dried. Is it possible to remove some of the stain with mineral spirits without ruining the door.
Hope you can help.
Answer Nicholas,
I am not really sure what a furniture stripper would do to the fiberglass, you could try a little on a bottom corner, or acetone but, that might also eat the fiberglass.
Since a stain is not really the right application here, I would paint over it with a primer like "kilz" then paint it the color of choice.
Whatever you use, you want it to be water based, (if it is water clean-up, then it is a water based product).
The water based latex will adhere to the fiberglass better.
The stains are meant to soak into wood fibers and cannot get into the fiberglass, that's why it didn't turn out to well.
You could try using a paint just a little darker than the color your wanting to end up with and thinning it down with water until you get the look your wanting. You can thin that down until it looks like a stain.
