Home Improvement--General - attic insulation

Expert: Len Kroll - 7/6/2009

Question
I have a hip roof around the entire parameter of my house, my soffits are open not inclosed, each soffit vent has a ceiling joist in the middle of each vent.   I want to add attic insulation but cannot without covering the vent with insulation. The ceiling joist block me from adding a fiberglass panel to the roof rafters allowing it to transmit up from the vent but cannot due to the ceiling joist either set off center to the vent or smack in the middle.   I have thought of blowing insulation in from the attic side then blowing it out of the way to reopen the vent from outside the house?  Any ideas?

Answer
David,

If you use poly vent baffles you can just cut a slot in the baffle so it fits over the ceiling joist.

You can also place the baffle so it bumps into the ceiling joist, then add your batt insulation under the baffle only to the point of the edge of the baffle.  Even if you don't get 100% coverage with the added insulation, you will still get a much improved insulation value for the house.  Good luck.
