Home Improvement--General - rough openings log walls

Expert: Donald Bosch - 8/20/2009

Question
I have a 1915 built log house (I'd expect most of the settling of logs has occurred?)but it's dark inside and I want to add some windows I have never done one so any instruction re: rough opening sizes to cut and basic installation of vinyly or wood windows that pertain particularly to log walls would be appreciated.
thanks

Answer
Hi Van,

From what little experience I have gathered with log homes, I believe it is important to make an opening and tie all the logs together with a frame of boards so that nothing can move around.

If you cut an opening, you will have to make a frame top/bottom and both sides in a board that is at least as wide as the depth of the wall so that you can caulk the logs to the frame on the outside to eliminate any water infiltration.  After that is done, you can insert your window into the frame, leaving room for insulation and then caulk it to finish. Use batt insulation. If you are using wooden windows, you can finish with an exterior molding and the same can be done on the inside as well.

Vinyl windows on a log home just don't look right to me, but I guess it is a choice.

Send me an e-mail with a picture of the outside and the inside of the area you wish to install a window, and I'll send you a quick drawing of how it can be done, as well as the opening sizes needed.  send to dondxin1@hughes.net

regards,

Don.
