Home Improvement--General/BASEMAENT BEAM

I just purchased a bungalow and in the basement there is a beam supporting a span 26 feet. This beam is 4 2x8 nailed together with a post in the middle. I want to remove this post and replace the beam with an engineered beam. Is this possible and how big would it need to be

It is possible. My feeling is that you will lose a great deal of headroom though. 26 feet is a long way to go unsupported  for a primary house beam. You will need to check with a structural engineer to see how big exactly. 16" or 22" comes to mind- but check with an engineer.
