Home Improvement--General/Asphalt Driveway

Question
It's time to think about replacing my 30 year old asphalt driveway with a new one. What are the important technical questions to ask a potential installer of the driveway? Are there different grades of asphalt? Depth of gravel layer? Size of gravel? Height of asphalt layer? Etc.

Thanks,
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe-  Asphalt quality is roughly the same. The most important question is thickness of asphalt and gravel thickness. Asphalt should be 2 1/2" and gravel 4". Compacting of gravel is a must before they lay the top coating asphalt. Most guys skip or skimp this part. The best gravel is called "Airport Mix"- it is crushed concrete that packs very well-so well you can land a plane on it.....Make sure you talk to references from the contractor and go see some of other driveways they have done recently.
Please feel free to contact me for any reason.
Best,
Glen
