Question Dear Odus,
Recently built a closet in the basement. It is lined with cedar(the four walls and ceiling). Carpet on floor.
Now find mildew(mould) appearing on some of the clothing there. Other rooms in the basement - clothing fine. Cedar closet appears humid. Other areas have floor registers but the cedar closet has no ventilation. Just a door, which was kept closed.
What do you suggest?
Thanking you in advance.
Answer Hello Maurice,
As you have noticed, it is the high humidity building up in the closet that is the problem. A dehumidifier, and/or ventilation can alleviate this problem. Try to get the humidity below 38-40% in the closet. A humidistat can measure the humidity for you.
Temperature difference between the closet air and the remainder of the basement could be adding to the problem. The higher the air temperature, the more moisture the air can carry.
It sounds like you already suspect the problem or problems here.
Have a good day,
Odus
