Home Recording - Record a song in my voice on a computer
Expert: Brad Lyons - 5/11/2009
Question QUESTION: Hi Brad,
Not sure if I am directing the question to the right expert, but I will go on anyways. I have a Dell computer with Windows XP and all the basic multi-media options available. I just bought a few sing-along Karaoke CDs. I want to sing along with the music and record the entire song (with the music as well as my voice) in a file. How do I go about it? I am a novice in computers as well as audio-systems. Please explain in detail.
Thanks,
Uday
ANSWER: Karaoke is a completely different world. The issue is you can't play audio in one application while recording it in another. However if they provide these files as a standard .WAV file or as CD audio, then you could import the audio into an audio program. Please see if that's possible.

QUESTION: Thank you Brad for your prompt reply. If I could rip the Karaoke CD tracks into standard .wav files, then would it be possible to record the entire song (with the music as well as my voice)? Just a few questions:
1. How do I record my voice and save it on the computer as an audio file (without karaoke CD or anything, just my voice)? What hardware/software do I need?
2. I know I need a mic for sure. Can you suggest me a good mic for PC? I can't spend more than $100.00 for the mic.
Thanks,
Uday
Answer I'm sorry, $100 won't get you very far.... I actually have a 20ft microphone cable that I spent $150 on alone :( BUT, you might want to check this out:
This will be both the microphone input AND the audio playback output. If you can rip the .WAV files, you'll be fine---but remember you also need software which will come at a cost as well.
