Question QUESTION: hey, brad! I've got a small prob. I just got my first apogee ad8000! I've got my mac g5 and my leopard osx now how do i start using it?
a little background on what i bought with it:
DAC II
DIGI 8+
now questions:
1.)can I plug in for protools 8 hd? It said i can.
2.)aes /ebu and s/pdif, which should i plug to my comp?
3.)it came with no manual so I'm wondering what the ins are for. that's not used as a mic pre, right?
4.)where would i plug speakers or headphones for it for when i mix.
5.)i didn't get screwed over with the price did i? i know the rosetta is newer but i REALLY can't afford that.
ANSWER: In it's day, the AD8000 was an amazing box! With the D/A option it was about $7,000 or so---I had (5) of them so I know they were not cheap, but worth every penny. They are still useful today, depending on what it's being used and where you are upgrading from. I am not aware tht this interface supports ProToolsHD, I believe it's only ProTools Mix--but don't quote me on that. The ins and outs are simply ins and outs, it's just an AD/DA unit. You'll want a speaker management controller to connect into your monitors.
May I ask---did you know what this thing is before you bought it?

QUESTION: Haha yes I knew exactly what it was and that you plug the mic pre into the a/d converter and then the a/d converter would be plugged into the mac. I wouldn't spend nearly 800.00 on something I didn't know anything about. The only thing was I was wondering about was connecting it. I have some experience with using it, but the part about connecting it was my challenge. I'm still curious where I'd plug in my speakers and what are the ins used for. I found what I think were the manuals but it said nothing bout them.
Answer It won't say anything about connecting speakers, because that's not the intent of this converter. You really should be using something like one of the following:
