About Mae Kowalke
Expertise I can answer pretty much any question about homeschooling, particularly
in relation to the unschooling method. I am happy to answer questions
from parents who are homeschooling their children or kids/teens who are
being educated at home. I can also offer perspective on life after
homeschooling, and what it`s like to be a grown homechooler in college
and the workplace.
Experience I am a grown homeschooler. My three younger sisters and I were educated at home from K-12. We were unschoolers, so my experience lies primarily in that area of homeschooling.

Question I love the idea of unschooling, but my parents are really busy and don't have time to it. Are there other alternatives to going to school? Is it possible to unschool myself? (wishful thinking...)
Answer Hi, Rose. The short answer to your question is that yes, if you're really serious about unschooling, you can take charge and make it happen. Here's a three-step action plan:
1. Read the book The Teenage Liberation Handbook by Grace Llewellyn.
2. Have your parents read The Teenage Liberation Handbook.
3. Find a local homeschool support group and connect with its members to get advice about legal requirements in your state. You can find a group on one of these sites: http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regional/Region.htm, http://www.midnightbeach.com/hs/listlist.html, http://www.homeedmag.com/groups/.
Good luck!
-Mae
