About Jennie O'Bryan
Expertise
I am able to answer a wide range of questions regarding curriculum, educational styles, publicly funded homeschool resources centers, some general questions regarding policy and legality issues, unskooling and freeskool models, and more.

Experience
I am an instructor with years of experience teaching in a variety of non-traditional settings (i.e. homeschool or unschool groups, community college programs for the under 18 crowd, libraries, museums, etc). I write curriculum for a variety of subjects, I recently ended employment with a children's museum as an education and curriculum director so that I could start a freeskool for kids ages 5-12. I also have two children (7 and 14) and have participated in a wide range of homeschool/unskool models as a parent.

Education/Credentials
High School, Some college, and a general thirst for knowledge and personal enrichment.

Home Schooling - High School Credit for Home School

Expert: Jennie O'Bryan - 9/24/2009

Question
I am the registrar at an Adult School in California.  I have several students asking me to grant them high school credits for home school work they have completed. What are the rules regarding this issue?  How are transcripts generated?

Answer
Hi Patsy-

I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. The answer to your question varies greatly from state to state and even district to district.  For instance, California has charter schools and my home state (Washington) does not...you wouldn't believe the differences/difficulties that arise for co-op and private schools (most of which would be charter schools in Cali).  I'd recommend searching online for California's state laws/codes. In WA, they are called RCWs (Revised Code of Washington). I may be off, but I believe you can find them here :  http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/calawquery?codesection=edc&codebody=&hits=20

Start by familiarizing yourself with what the state requires, then call the superintendent's office for the school district in which you reside. Often, district offices will have policies that they claim are state law but aren't.  It would probably be a good idea to print a copy of the appropriate codes, then make an appointment with the local district office and ask your question of them.

Hope this at least points you in the right direction. Good luck.
