Home Theater - blue ray connection to home theatre
Expert: Bobbert - 10/25/2009
Question QUESTION: Hi, I have a Samsung HD/TV and a Samsung Blue Ray player. I have purchased a Samsung H322 Home Theatre System. How do I integrate the two. The Home system has 1 HDMI out and the Blue Ray Player has 1 HDMI out. This is what's confusing me>
ANSWER: There is no way to connect to the Blu-ray player to the HTIB receiver, if the HTIB unit has a Digital Audio In, you can pass a transcoded digital audio signal from the BR player, which would give you AC-3 or DTS 5.1 output to the HTIB receiver. This isn't ideal (you don't get the benefit of the lossless codecs found on BR discs), although it would work. If a digital audio input is unavailable, there is generally no "clean" way to connect the two, as you won't have surround sound from the BR player (which somewhat defeats the purpose of BR movies).

QUESTION: Since asking the question I received further info. Have been told that if I connect my bluray to the HT322 with a digital audio optical cable that will give me sound. The bluray would stay connected to the TV (HDMI). However, how would I get sound of regular TV programming through the speakers. My TV has a 3rd unused HDMI (in). Could I connect the HT322 HDMI (out) to that? Or could I connect the audio L. R (out)opn the TV to the L.R. (in) on the HT322. Samsung told me that this Home Theatre system would be compatible with my Blue Ray!
Thanks again for your help. John.
Answer So your system has a digital input, which means you can connect it as originally mentioned, although you'll need to configure the Blu-ray player to transcode for DD or DTS, and not attempt to pass the lossless audio (otherwise you likely won't have audio, granted, the unit may do this automatically, so it might not be a setting you have to adjust). Regarding connection of the TV, the HDMI connection you've found is irrelevant, as it isn't passing data back to the receiver, although the stereo audio output to the receiver would work. Without Pro Logic or a similar upmixing feature, you will be limited to stereo sound on the home theatre system when viewing broadcast TV, simply as a limitation of the wiring.
