Home Theater - Calibration

Expert: Bobbert - 11/4/2009

Question
I purchased a Samsung 67" tv. It has the led bulb. Is it really worth spending a few hundred bucks for calibration and how much will it improve my picture, I have HD and am very happy with the picture. Please recomend/ Thanks Alot!

Answer
I wouldn't honestly pay for calibration outside of a professional environment (where the display is being used for something like pre-production presswork), essentially all it will accomplish is adjusting the color/picture quality towards a "more accurate" level (for example if the display goes to display "red", its output "red" is as close to how the source material has recorded it). This may or may not improve your perception of the video quality, but do keep in mind its entirely optional. Honestly what I would suggest is just adjusting the color/picture settings yourself, more towards what looks good to you or with regard to your room (such as lighting). If you're happy with the current picture, you could leave it be, and be perfectly fine for the life of the display as well.
