Honda - Jump Starting battery

Expert: Reiner V - 5/24/2009

Question
This is really a general question for any car. If I want to be jump started by another car, does anything else matter besides that the other battery is also 12 volts and healthy? i.e. does the size or cranking AH matter?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Dave,

As long as the other car has a good battery and yes, 12 volts. The most common mistake people make more than anything else is matching the polarity of the cables, a lot of folks get this wrong and end up blowing the main fuse of the car being jump started. In any event, the car being jump started has no lights , no radio etc and it is the main fuse that got blown.

Another thing is to make sure the good car with the good battery has to be running while making the jump. It is also good to wait a good 5-10 minutes after connecting the batteries before attempting to turn the bad car over.
