Subject: Shudder in 1st Gear

Question
'89 Accord LX 4dr carb 5spd. When cold, going into 1st gear results in shudder. If I give it some more gas and baby the clutch pedal, it'll go into gear OK. 2nd gear also sometimes shudders a tiny bit. After warm-up, all is well. Do I need a new clutch kit?

Answer
Sounds like you do need a clutch.
But before jumping into conclusions, check the clutch cable adjustment.
At the cable, pill up on the cable & see if there is any play.
Clutch cable free play should be 5mm-10mm.
If it is then, yes you need a new clutch Disc/Pressure plate/Through out bearing/Flywheel (New or Re manufactured).
Good luck.
