Question Hi. I lived in Honduras for 6 years, where I married and had my first son. We have been in US for last 20 years and can finally afford a trip back to see family. There was a Bank of America in Tegus when I lived there and I was able to access money from my US account. I don't think they are still there. Can we use our Visa debit card to get lempiras out there? Will we incur charges for doing that, and if so, do you know how much? Also - has it really gotten so much more dangerous there in the last 20 years? Reports I read on internet are scary. I used to travel alone all the time and never had a problem. We want to go to Copan, Lago Yojoa, San Pedro, etc. Any places to avoid? Any suggestions for brief stay in Bay Islands (we've never been).
Thanks so much!
Answer Hello,
You can use your credit or debit card in any ATM to withdraw money and you can also use them to pay for stuff at most stores and restaurants.
I don't know about the charges but you should ask your bank.
It is dangerous in some parts of the country and in some parts of the major cities. It is definitely a different Honduras than it was 20 years ago. I suggest taking tours as opposed to renting a car and driving from city to city. If you decide to drive make sure to avoid stopping until you get to your destination, fill up on gas before you leave and don't stop even at gas stations. DO NOT travel at night.
If you are on a budget I suggest Utila, if you are looking for a more touristy place visit Roatan. Utila is known for it's cheap food and lodging and Roatan even has 4 star hotels and resorts.
If you have any more questions don't hesitate to aak!
