Honduras - using ATM cards in Honduras

Expert: Paul Berman - 2/4/2009

Question
Hey Paul!  I've been researching online like crazy to figure out which ATM cards will work in Honduras.  Here's my question: I am going to La Ceiba, and have a debit (atm) card with the Plus and Star sign on the back (VISA).  Online at mastercard it says there are 3 atm's that support the star/plus symbol.  Should I try to get a Cirrus mastercard debit card as well or will the Visa Plus/Star card work for withdrawing money from my US account?  Also, if I want to go to Utila or Roatan from La Ceiba in the morning and return in the afternoon, is that plausible?  Enough time, etc?
Thanks so much for the help!

Answer
Natalie,

You should be fine with you current ATM card, but if you want to be extra careful, go ahead and get a Cirrus one as well.  I used my ATM card there all the time without trouble.  You will be able to find an ATM at almost any bank.

As for going to Utila/Roatan in the morning and returning the same afternoon, it might be possible, but you would have little to no time to see anything beyond the airport if it is.  I would not try to do that.  Spend a few days at least in the islands if you can and relax.

Have fun and enjoy your trip.  Make sure you take all the precautions you possibly can to stay safe while you are in Honduras.

Paul
