Honduras - Bringing my vehicle with me to honduras

Expert: Paul Berman - 8/21/2009

Question
I am thinking about moving to Honduras with my fiance and we have just paid off our truck and if we do move there i was wondering is it worth shipping the truck to there or sell it here in the US. Do you know how i can find out how much it would cost to do something like that.
Thank you,
Tracie

Answer
Tracie,

While I can't provide insight on finding a shipper here are a few things that may help you with you decision on whether or not to bring your car there.

- If you want to buy a truck there it likely will cost more there than it would in the US.  Tariffs, etc increase the price of trucks there.

- Diesel trucks are more popular as the fuel is cheaper and the engines are cheaper to keep running.  You can find gasoline though.

- Repairs are cheaper there than in the US as labor costs are considerably lower.  So you can afford to keep repairing an older vehicle much longer and keep it running whereas in the US you get to the point where it becomes too expensive to repair.

- Japanese trucks are by far more common in Honduras.  If you have an American truck it will be harder to find parts and mechanics who are familiar with them -- but not impossible.  And demand for it will be lower should you later choose to sell it there.

- I believe there are shippers (boats)that leave from New Orleans and Los Angeles and go to Honduras that you may want to look into.

- If you do decide to bring your truck into the country, there will be paperwork.  There are people who specialize in helping you prepare that paperwork.  I would recommend seeking their help.  They are called "tramitadores."
