Question Ok here is another scenario i have, We were also thinking about just driving all the way to Honduras going through Texas and and then through all the other countries there but i heard you have to pay some kind of money to take it across and if you dont mind do you know what kinda of map to use i dont want to get hurt i just want to be with my bother and my new family there. But i heard it was dangerous and now i am scared dont know what to do
Answer Tracie,
There are fees to bring the car across the border and get it registered in Honduras (if you plan on keeping it there). Check into Mexico and Guatamala but I don't think they will charge you anything to bring your car across their boarder. Just the normal fees they might charge for crossing the boarder (VISA, etc).
As for a map, I would get a GPS and buy the maps. That would by far be the easiest and most reliable.
Driving there can be dangerous. I would not be pushing to drive at night as it can be common for people to put up barricades on the road to make you stop and then rob or assault you or worse. The roads themselves can be under poor repair and dangerous (I am thinking more about Guatamala and Honduras than Mexico). If you have an accident or break down you need to be prepared to deal with your circumstances. And the people are "crazy" when they drive. Let's just say that the rules of the road are often viewed as suggestions more than laws. And be prepared to pay small bribes to the police along the way when they pull you over and shake you down for $20. Having said that, I have driven all over Honduras without major problems. You need to be careful though and recognize that you are taking certain risks.
As for Mexico, I think you may need to buy temporary car insurance to drive your car there. Make sure you check into that.
