Honduras/selling a US car in Honduras
Expert: JRA - 8/9/2009
QuestionBuenas,
I am looking into driving down to Honduras this winter in my pickup and want to sell the vehicle there before I leave. Do you know anything about the legal aspects of this? Import tariffs and getting permission to sell it are the big mysteries to me. Also, do you want to buy a car?
Gracias por su tiempo y consejos.
AnswerHola,
I've heard that when you enter the country as a tourist they give you permission to drive the vehicle for about 6 months and you can keep renewing this permission simply by driving to the border exiting and reentering Honduras.
I think that if you entered the country, drove around for some time and then wanted to sell the car, you would have to pay the same taxes as if you were a used car importer.
Based on the Blue Book value of the vehicle: 12% sales tax and 10-15% import tax for a work truck and up to 30% for a "luxury truck" (most newer four door trucks) and SUVs.
Also, no, thanks, I don't want to buy a car.
Have a good trip and I hope you enjoy your stay here,
