Honduras - Driving in Honduras

Expert: JRA - 10/19/2006

Question
Dear JRA,

We want to drive a local Honduran car (from a friend, with fully paid taxes etc) with our Dutch driving licence? Is that possible? Or is driving with a foreign licence only allowed in rental cars?
Thanks for your answer.
Regards,
Maarten

Answer
Hi,
You can drive the car for about three months starting the date that you arrive in Honduras with your dutch license.  You should carry your passport to provide proof that you have been in the country for less than three months.  If you're going to be in the country for a longer period of time I suggest you get a Honduras driver's license.  The cost is about $20 or Lps. 500.  It is a rather tiresome process but you can keep your passport in a safe place and the traffic cops won't give you any problems.

Good luck
