Question I sponsor a little girl in Honduras through World Vision. She lives near Tegucigalpa, but it's about 30 miles southeast of the city. They call the project San Matias II. I know she lives near mountains.
Could you tell me more about where she lives?
Thanks.
Sarah
Answer Sarah,
I have not been to San Matias myself but I have been to some other towns in there area. Like you said, it is in the mountains. Actually, about 80 of Honduras is mountainous which makes farming very difficult. You see countless farms on 45 degree slopes of a mountain sides. The part of the country that San Matias is in actually has a pretty nice climate most of the year. Although Honduras doesn't experience the seasons quite like we do -- there is the rainy season and the not-rainy season.
I found a great link on the web when I did a quick google search. It looks like someone went to San Matias on a church mission and took some great pictures. I think these pictures will give you a much better feel for what life is like there than I could possibly describe in words. As you look through them you will see some people commenting on the poverty they are seeing. To be honest, San Matias looks like one of the more picturesque pueblos I have seen in Honduras (although it is still very poor by any standard).
