Honduras - Roatan island

Expert: Paul Berman - 7/25/2007

Question
I am going to visit the roatan islands. I was thinking of renting a scooter with my family and tour the whole island. Is this safe in the day light hours? Are the rules the same as the states? are there road rules? I will rent from a place in the west end.

Answer
Hi Gina,

You should be ok in daylight hours if you stay in tourist areas.  Be careful to not venture out too far.  I would highly encourage you to talk to the people wherever you decide to stay to get their advice.  It has been several years now since I was last in Roatan and things may have changed.  And of course, if it is possible, you would be safer if you could ride with another person rather than by yourself.

You have to be especially careful on a scooter there.  The roads on not like they are here in the US.  There are a lot of dirt roads and there can be lots of pot holes.  The rules are generally, "whoever has the biggest car has the right of way."  So make sure you drive defensively and make sure you know how to operate a two wheel vehicle safely.  But technically, all the road rules are basically the same as in the US.

You should be able to find a place or two that rent scooters in West End.  I know there were a few places the last time I was there.

Have fun,

Paul
