Honduras - Travelling to Utila

Question
Hi JRA.  Thanks in advance for answering my questions?  If possible, can you please provide as much detail as possible as I am having some difficulty finding answers over the internet to the following questions?

My boyfriend and I want to get to Utila.  We are coming from Canada (Montreal) and currently it looks like our flight will fly MOntreal to Miami to SPS and then onto La Ceiba.  How much approximately is it to Fly from La Ceiba to Utila and where can I find this info?  What about the ferry?

Also, we are wanting to spend the majority of our trip in Utila getting certified and then spend some time sight seeings and diving in Roatan.  Can we get to Roatan from Utila at minimal cost?  Can you give me an idea of how I can do this and what prices I am looking at for me and my boyfriend?  I'm assuming a ferry or locals could get us over to Roatan?

Finally, how far is Utila in minutes from Roatan?  Is it possible to sightsee on all of the Islands for minimal price?

Sorry, one more question.  Will I have a good time in Utila even though I am not a diver?  I am looking into getting PADI certified, however if I don't like it, will I still have things to do and will there be people around to talk to?

Thanks soo much....Jillian

Answer
Hi Jillian,

The flight from La Ceiba to Utila is about 10 minutes, the ferry is a much cheaper option and it takes about 1.5  hours.  Personally, I've always taken the ferry.

To get from Utila to Roatan there is another ferry and it takes about 30 minutes.  I believe that there is only one ferry per day that goes from Utila to Roatan.  I believe it is about $20.

Utila is mostly for divers, there are bars and good places to eat, there is a nice beach about 15 walking minutes away from downtown, you can take a boat to Water Key to go snorkeling, but there is not much more to do. However, as you might know, it is one of the cheapest places to get certified.

The island is packed year round with tourists, mostly from Europe.
There is much more to do in Roatan but food and lodging are more expensive.  If you're looking for an economical trip to get certified you should definitely stick with Utila.

If you have any more questions just ask.  Have a nice trip!
