Honduras - driving to honduras

Expert: Paul Berman - 7/21/2007

Question
I am thinking about driving solo to Roatan via motorcyle. 2 questions:
1.Should I?
2. If so what route is best from Eugene OR.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Bo
ps Where you just down there about 3 weeks ago?

Answer
Hi Bo.  No, I was not there about 3 weeks ago.  Must have been someone else.

I have a motorcycle too (Harley Davidson Sportster) so I know the appeal of riding down there.  It would be a lot of fun.  You would have to be very careful though.  The roads are not in good condition (pot holes everywhere, kids playing along the highway, washed out, debris, etc).  You would have to go slow.  And then there is the traffic.  If you have not driven before in Latin America it is quite an experience for sure.  It can only be described as total chaos.  And unless you have a Japanese dirt bike, you may have a problem finding someone to make repairs if you run into mechanical problems.

So having said all that, if you are up for taking those challenges (and others) on, go for it.  You might want to time it to avoid the rainy season though.  I would highly encourage you to find someone that has done this before though and talk to them.

As for the best route, there are only a few major highways through Central America.  You will want to cut down through Mexico, then Guatamala, and then cut across the top of Honduras over to San Pedro Sula and then probably over to La Ceiba where you can catch the ferry to Roatan.

Good luck and let me know what you decide to do.  And let me  know what kind of bike you have.  Of course, your other option could be to get down there and buy a motorcycle.  I could probably put you in contact with someone that lives in San Pedro Sula if you want to explore buying one.
