Question
hi i was wondering if you know of any orphanages or animal rehabilation center that accepts volunteers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.      thanks

Answer
Hi Annie,

I am afraid that I am not going to be able to be very helpful on this one.  I know there are a few orphanages, but I wouldn't be able to put you in contact with them.  Most children that lose their parents in Honduras are taken in by their extened family or some end up living on the street.

When I was there, I went to a center that did bird rescues and rehabilitation.  Mainly for parrots.  It was really sad to see what happened to the birds.  People would often capture one and put it in a sack.  They would then swing the sack around and get the bird to cry out.  Apparently, all of the the other parrots in the area would come to rescue it when they heard its cries.  That's when they would capture all of the other birds.  They then drug them, pack them in crates and ship them off to the US pet stores.  This center rescued a lot of the birds, many of which lost most of their feathers.

The Center was located near La Ceiba, Honduras but I do not remember its name or exact location unfortunately.  I don't even know if it is still there.

I wish I could be of more help.

Paul
