Question
I don't understand the classification of "B" claiming races,where "B" stands for beaten.
Why wouldn't a race such as NW1Y(non winners of 1 race this year )be classified as "beaten"?

Good question.... It is in Maryland's condition book, for instance, that dated conditions such as you stated, NW1Y, are titled as "Beaten Claiming". Sometimes the racing form has their own way of doing things that may not coincide with how the race was specifically written. I know some tracks call certain races, "beaten claiming", while others call them, "condition claiming".
My best answer is to tell you that the racing form uses this description to abbreviate the following types of races....
Usually you will see a beaten claiming race written for "three year olds or four and up who have not won three races". Also, you will note this term is attached to conditions that qualify horses who have not won a certain amount of races since a certain date, or combined with "or never won four races". Combining these conditions is a way to fill races that may normally not have enough horses to make the race.
The form just doesn't have the room to describe these specific conditions. So they just want you to get the determination that the race is not "open", "dated" or simply just a lifetime condition.
