Horse Racing - Aerobic training

Expert: Christopher Crocker - 9/24/2009

Question
Does aerobic training helps Quarter horses for short distances?. What about vitamins?

Answer
Yes. Aerobic training is important in Quarter horses for short distances. Aerobic training is 30%-40% involved in  actual racing of the quarter horse. Aerobic training is very important in conditioning the cardio, respiratory, tendons, ligaments, bone development and muscle development which supports the anaerobic training. Aerobic training is required to keep the blood chemistry fit for racing as well. Aerobic training is required to keep the muscles working in between racing as well. Although anaerobic training is required for actual race specific training, aerobic training should be practiced between workouts and racing. Aerobic training keeps the horse mentally fit as well. Walking, jogging or slow gallops are great for in between racing in keeping the horse's metabolism maintained.

Vitamins are very important for proper heart, lung, blood and muscle function. I suggest feeding high quality timothy hay and a high quality grain which contains a complete vitamin formula designed for race horses. You can add supplements as needed.
