About Ed Hess
Expertise
Have trained thoroughbreds for 30 odd years. Have been a licensed trainer for that long of time. I continue to train my race horses and thoroughly enjoy every day.

Experience

Experience: Licensed trainer for over 30 yrs. Have had lots of winners in all different types of races - from bottom claimers to top quality stakes winners. My best money winner was Aristocratic Cross (multiple stakes winner). My best claiming horse was Navajo Family, winner of 12 races in one year. I still enjoy racing a modest stable of horses each year.

Question
How old does a horse have to be before it can race?
In good health, how long can they race?
What is the life expectantcy of a horse in general?
What is the average weight of a race horse?

Answer
hi a horse should be at least 3 in my opinion to race  but they do race 2 yr olds because of the big purse money offered. i had horses racing ae 13 yrs of age in very good health. we had a pony who worked on the race track as my pony horse to take horses to the gate etc, and he lived to be 39. well that depends on weight, most horses racing are 900-1200 lbs, hope this helps you thanks ED HESS
