Question Hey Jamee,
I really like ur resumee and I think you're just the person who can help me! I box-jump and have been riding for 2 years now. I absolutly LOVE horses. I have been told I am a natural with horses before too :) Don't take me the wrong way when i say i would like info on being the boss of horses, I'm trying to say that I would like some advice on how to handle a horse that is being a little bit of a fart, lol like you know the supply teacher thing? I love all of the horses at my barn but there are a couple of horses there that scare me quite a bit, like Gem will pull nasty looks at you and sometimes even threaten a bite. When i say this about the horses the horses are not mis-treated at all, they all have clean box stalls and are very well taken care of but as you probably know horses definitly are characters, i would just like some advice on how to handle horses that are sort of scaring me.
Hope you can help me!!
Hayley
p.s~ my parents made me take 5 months off riding for the winter because it is on a dirt road so they don't want to slip in the winter and be stuck on a deserted road, will I regain my skills very fast? Some people say it's like a bike, you never forget.
Thanks again!!!:)
Answer Hello Hayley! Thank you for coming to me! I think I can help you:) lol
When it comes to horses like Gem, you really need to establish dominance. The last thing you want to do is show the horse you are scared of him. If the horse tries to bite you, or hurt you in any way, or even pull a nasty stunt, don't forget the 3 second rule!
That is very important. Say, Gem goes to bite you, and you wait 30 seconds before you get firm, and give him a little smack on the neck or something, by that time, he will have forgotten what he did wrong. You have 3 seconds to react.
And don't get me wrong, some horses do appeal ''scary''. The best thing you can do, is act like you are the boss, and that you are NOT afraid of them. If they try to bite you or kick you, get a really firm voice out, and say : Hey!!!! really deep and firm.
I have delt with horses that have scared me too. The main thing to do, is just put the fear behind you, and keep it in your head that you are the boss. Be very firm. Not aggressive, but firm.
I hope that helps!!
And now for the riding part.. lol
You will probably get a little bit ''rusty'' but you will not forget how to do things. For example, when you go for a posting trot, yah your legs might bobble around for a little while, and your heels may come up, but after a little while, everything will be back to normal.
To prevent leg problems like that thow, stand on stairs with your tippy does, and put all the weight in your heels, then life yourself up on your toes...then back in your heels....etc.
Also, as funny as this may sound, squats help IMMENSLY.
good luck!!!
